Building Educational Technologies for Code-Switching: Current Practices, Difficulties and Future Directions

Code-switching (CSW) is the phenomenon where speakers use two or more languages in a single discourse utterance—an increasingly recognised natural product of multilingualism many settings. In language teaching and learning particular, code-switching has been shown to bring pedagogical benefits, including accelerating students’ confidence, increasing their access content, as well improving participation engagement. Unfortunately, however, current educational technologies are not yet able keep up with this ‘multilingual turn’ education, partly responsible for constraint practice only classroom contexts. an effort make progress area, we offer data-driven position paper discussing state affairs, difficulties existing processing (NLP) tools CSW possible directions future work. We specifically focus on cases feedback assessment technologies, demonstrating how state-of-the-art these domains fails data due lack appropriate training data, robust evaluation benchmarks end-to-end user-facing applications. present some empirical user manifests suggest technological solutions each scenarios.
